Love and Sacrifice

As an individual who believes in lifelong learning, I applied to Grand
Canyon University College of Nursing in 2004 to pursue my desire to become a
psychiatric nurse and educator. I have completed the first leg of this
journey by obtaining my BSN at Grand Canyon University. My present goal is
to add to my experiences and education by pursuing a Master of Science in
Nursing-Nursing Leadership. I observed the need for qualified, passionate
instructors in the clinical setting. This degree will enforce the foundation
in which I am building to become a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner with a
specialty in adult and family psychiatric mental health. Throughout this
entire journey I moved my entire family: husband and two young sons to
Arizona away from our family and familiar surrounding to chase my dream of
Nursing. There have been a multitude of challenges throughout this that have
made me wiser and stronger mentally as well as spiritually. My youngest son
was born with lung disease and has had many health challenges, without
health insurance many times we chose his medicine over paying bills, getting
food from pantries, we had our only means of transportation reposed and when
I had to be at my clinical at six am many times I walked or rode a bike just
to make it on time. Because of my gruelling school/clinical schedule my
husband had to leave his job to stay with our son’ s which took away more
than half of our income and I was only able to work part time. My eldest son
has many behavorial and mental challenges, this all causing a great strain
on my marriage. We are working through the challenges and because of the
love and support of my husband, we have agreed for me to complete my
education. I feel I deserve this scholarship because I have overcome many
obstacles in my life to come out on top, you have to work hard for what you
want in life, and many times you may have to struggle and sacrifice, but I
knew I had to do this to provide a better life for my family. So whenever I
thought or felt like giving up I looked at them and prayed for strength and
knew that it would not be like this forever. The activities that I been
involved with have helped me grow as a person and have allowed me to reach
out a helping hand to the community and those I come in contact with, a
natural spirit of giving.
